Ah yes of course, the Project Dependencies… that makes sense.

Regarding Debug vs Release, you may be able to use the $(Configuration) macro. Apparently $(Platform) works, so I imagine it will:

Take a look at http://www.monogame.net/documentation/?page=MGCB towards the bottom there is a section on Preprocessor Macros I personally use bin$(Platform) and obj($Platform) in my .mgcb files. Note setting obj is important so the intermediate files between platforms don’t get mixed up.
