Monogame and Android

Alright, so I guess this doesn’t have much to due with Monogame for that I apologize but…

Is there a alternative to Xamarin that’ll allow monogame + C# to run on android? I’m 15, and I don’t have enough money to pay $25 every month, which brings my next question, assuming there is no alternative can I just buy 1 month release a bunch of games and not pay for the next month and still have those games on the market store for commercial use?

Thanks!

Unfortunately, there is no real alternative to use C# on Android. There have been one or two other attempts, but they never got far. dot42 started, appeared to get some interest, then died and was open-sourced. It tries to map C# to Java, which is not a good approach in my opinion.

Your games won’t stop working if you don’t have an active Xamarin license, but you won’t be able to update them. To keep the apps on the store you just need to maintain your Google Developer account.

Are you a full time student? Xamarin offers free licences for students.

Alright, thank you :).

Well yeah, but in 8th grade and I’m not sure if my school supports it unless it unless its district based, and I don’t have any of the things to verify I’m a student, but I’m working on it, ether way does it allow commercial use?

You can also use xamarins free sarter licence. It’ll work, but it’ll limit the size of your game.

The problem there is, I doubt that one is commercial use, right? I mean I can defiantly use it for fun but my goal for this summer is to create, while even most likely small revenue, but create multiple streams of income and learn from those apps I make over the summer which ones were most successful and why. I am willing to pay $25 a month if I absolutely have to, to get started for 3 months in specially if the apps do make over $25 or even exactly $25, but my family doesn’t exactly have the money to do so, maybe we will by summer though, I don’t know.

You can publish your game, even under the starter license. Your simply restricted by the size of compiled c# code. It’s entirely possible that simply adding the MonoGame library will put you over the limit and you won’t be able to actually use the free license. But you won’t know until you try. (I’ve always had a business or enterprise license).

Alternatively, you can wait to see what Microsoft plans to do with xamarin after the acquisition. Lots of people think Microsoft is simply doing to include Xamarin as part of visual studio community and it’ll be free. /shrug only theories. Gotta wait until build at the end of the month.

So we’ll know soon? Wow! I was thinking we would have to wait till Visual studio 2016. About the start license, that’s awesome! However I’m having trouble finding a page showing it compared to other licenses so I can know for that it will allow commercial use, and if it does awesome!

Thanks for all the help so far guys

Well, when Xamarin announced that MS bought them they also said they would update everyone on what’s going to happen at Build (3/30-4/1) and at Evolve (4/24-4/28). People are keeping their fingers crossed that Xamarin will be free (with MS’s recent switch to open source and free versions of their software). But all of that is speculation.

A realistic approach would be this: start with Xamarin’s Starter license. According to their website (which I linked in a previous response), you can publish to the app stores. If that doesn’t work, get something up and working with the starter license and show your parents, I bet you they will cough up a measly $25 to fund their child’s interest. I have two sons and if one of them came up to me and showed me an app that they started working on, but couldn’t finish because they were limited by the license, I would totally buy them a better license.

I think someone already mentioned this, but having an Indie license for a month or two won’t invalidate builds that have already been created. You simply won’t be able to create more until you renew. But hopefully your games will earn you enough to continue affording a $25 license.

The starter edition is useless for Monogame, as it imposes a size limit, which is exceeded by the framework libraries.

Last year Xamarin offered free licenses for indie and Monogame developers. This offer has now expired. Hopefully they will make it available again. It would help, if you had some Windows games to demonstrate. If you do, write to them and ask for a free license. I won’t be surprised, if they do offer it to you.

Alright awesome, I’ll defiantly try that if my school doesn’t do dreamspark. I keep forgetting to ask them, and now I have to wait till spring break to end to ask. Anyways thanks
