No sound on iPhone except through headphones

Hi folks, really odd problem here. I’m trying to play a sound effect (using a sound effect and a sound effect instance). Everything works fine through the simulator, and everything works fine on a physical iPad. However when I try to run my app on a physical iPhone there is no sound until I plug headphones in! I’ve tried this on a 4s and a 6s. Any ideas what I could be doing wrong.

I should add, I’m using Xamarin Studio on a Mac and I’m having to use the latest MonoGame source (due to an iOS9 issue with the 3.4 release). All my physical devices are on iOS9 so not sure if this is the key.
